Ejike Uzoenyi has been drafted into Nigeria’s World Cup squad, following Elderson Echiejile’s hamstring injury last week.

The winger was one of seven players cut out of the final squad to head to Brazil, but the 22-year-old will now join up with the Super Eagles ahead of their first game against Iran on Monday.

Uzoenyi told BBC Sport: “It would have been sweeter if I had been chosen on merit, which I think I deserve. But I am happy to be given another chance.

“The World Cup is the biggest stage for everyone to play.”

The youthful Nigerian was voted the best player in January’s African Nations Championship, where Nigeria finished third.

Although manager Stephen Keshi initially left Uzoenyi out of the squad, the winger had nothing but praise for his coach: “From the beginning coach Stephen Keshi has been with me, treated me like a father will his son, and I have been everywhere with him.”
