Sio & El-Nenny star in Basel Victory
African performers Giovanni Sio and Mohamed El-Nenny starred as Basel downed Luzern in the Swiss top flight.
Having already beaten Luzern once this week, Swiss giants Basel repeated the trick with a 2-0 victory.
Two African performers emerged as the key protagonists in a tight contest.
After some close opening stages, with little quality separating the two sides, Ivorian frontman Giovanni Sio broke the deadlock with a goal in the 51st minute.
His headed finish forced Luzern to push out and commit more men forward, but this left them open to the counter-attack.
It took Basel the best part of the second half to profit, but they managed a second late on. El-Nenny’s smart through ball was met by Sio who delivered a calm finish to seal the victory and extinguish any feint Luzern hopes.
The victory keeps Basel atop the Swiss Raffeisen Super Leage, three points ahead of closest rivals Grasshopper Zurich.
Sio spearheaded the Cote d’Ivoire attack in the Elephants’ recent friendly draw with Belgium. He enjoys the faith of manager Sabri Lamouchi and could enjoy some game time in Brazil this summer.
