Schlupp scores as Leicester & Liverpool draw

Jeffrey Schlupp struck on the hour mark to help his side Leicester City force a 2-2 draw away at Liverpool in Premier League action on New Year’s Day.

Following two well-converted controversial penalties by Reds captain Steven Gerrard in the first period, coach Nigel Pearson’s half-time pep talk prompted a comeback for the visitors.

On return from the dressing room, David Nugent’s header from the centre of the box halved their deficit in the 58th minute.

And it only needed two more minutes before the Ghana international Schlupp leveled matters for the Blue Army with a left-footed shot from outside the box that beat Simeon Mignolet to the bottom right corner.

For now, that fight doesn’t elevate Leicester in the table. They remain bottom with 14 points from 20 matches.

But Black Stars boss Avram Grant will be impressed with the 22-year-old’s efforts and will hope that he can carry on the same to the forthcoming 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea later this month.

The four-time Africa champions face Algeria, South Africa and Senegal in Group C.
