Hosts Orlando Pirates beat Uganda Revenue Authority 2-1 on Saturday to take the lead in the CAF Confederations Cup first round first-leg fixture.

After taking early control of the proceedings at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, the Buccaneers were gifted with the opener from centre back Rooi Mahamutsa in the fourth minute.

And albeit in bits, URA players Oscar Agaba, Ali Feni, Frank Kalanda and Saidi Kyeyune who grew in confidence and began to dominate in the middle of the pack.

But while their possession hardly harmed Orlando Pirates’ custodian Brighton Mhlongo for over an hour, the Parktown-based side doubled their lead late on through substitute Lehlonoholo Majoro.

The Bafana Bafana striker’s 23-yard shot beat URA goal keeper Brian Bwete far left in the 85th minute to briefly dent the visitors’ hopes.

And if all seemed to be a comfortable lead that they would take to the Kampala leg in a fortnight, Orlando Pirates defender Happy Jele headed in his own net off an Elukhana Nkugwa cross to illuminate the URA camp.

That late consolation means Pirates, winners of the 1995 CAF Champions League, ought to play with more consciousness in the return leg. But in all, it’s a result URA boss Alex Isabirye will take home.

Orlando Pirates XI: Mhlongo, Jele, Mahamutsa, Sangweni, Matlaba, Makola, Masalesa, Manyisa, Myeni, Erasmus, Bacela
