Partey strike sends Madrid top
Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey was the hereo as Atletico Madrid earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over Levante to go top of La Liga.
The goal was Partey’s first in the Spanish top-flight and it came with nine minutes to end proceedings.
A dominant Atletico Madrid had failed make the most of their several opportunities. The closest was Koke cracking the underside of the crossbar with a half-volley.
Thomas Partey replaced Jackson Martinez in the 73rd minute and it took him only seven minutes to score the match winner for Roji-Blancos.
The 22-year old collected a pass from Gabi, burst through the centre of the penalty area and struck a tame shot but fortunately for him Levante goalkeeper Marino could not hold on as the ball crept over the line.
Atletico have 41 points, two more than Barcelona who have a game in hand.
Following his sumptuous assist against Rayo Vallecano in midweek, Partey has now been involved in two goals in last two games.
