No AFCON for Song
Cameroon midfielder Alex Song has been left out of the Indomitable Lions squad for January’s Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
German coach Volker Finke has kept the West Ham United midfielder. who hasn’t featured for Cameroon since getting sent off at the World Cup, out of his squad.
Despite Song’s admirable form for the Hammers, which sees the East London club sit fourth in the Premier League, Finke has opted not to recall the former Arsenal man to his preliminary AFCON squad.
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has hailed Song as a leader of his team, but his current form has been given no recognition by the Cameroon chief.
The Indomitable Lions were unbeaten throughout qualifying, having lost all their matches at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s form with nine league goals for Bundesliga side Schalke 04 has earned his place in the Cameroon squad which travels to Malabo for the finals on January 16. He, along with Vincent Aboubakar and Nicolas N’koulou, will be the side’s key men.
