M’Poku scores on DR Congo debut
On-loan Cagliari winger Paul-Jose M’Poku scored on his DR Congo debut against Iraq in the first of two friendlies against the same opponents in Dubai on Saturday.
M’Poku, 22, moved to Belgium from Kinshasa as a child and holds Belgian citizenship having featured for all the youth teams of the European country. But the Ex-Tottenham man has opted to represent the country of his birth.
It took M’Poku 20 minutes to score his first international goal as he levelled from the penalty spot after defender Ahmad Ibrahim had given Iraq the lead five minutes into the game. Humam Tariq put Iraq in the lead again in the 71st minute which proved to be enough to secure victory for the Asians.
DR Congo who finished third at the Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea last month will seek revenge when they come up against the Iraqi’s at the same venue on Tuesday.
M’Poku has scored eight goals and assisted one in 12 appearances for Standard Liège and Cagliari this season. He joined the Italian side on-loan in the January transfer window with an option to buy at the end of the season.
