Uganda Revenue Authority came from a goal down twice to defeat Madagascan side Elgeco Plus 3-2 in the first leg of the CAF Confederations Cup preliminary round tie at Namboole Stadium on Friday.

Following a wasteful first-half, hosts URA found themselves on the back foot when Yvon Njilamanana converted a penalty to put Elgeco in the lead after Jonathan Mugabi was sent off for the reckless challenge.

The score line prompted URA coach Alex Isabirye to make three quick substitutions and the introduction of Elukhana Nkugwa, Frank Kalanda and Ali Feni for Peter Lwasa, Patrick Ochan and Saidi Kyeyune respectively offered the reigning Uganda Cup champions a new life line.

Quick passing and intense pressure paid off as Feni’s cross found Robert Ssentongo who neatly beat Elgeco custodian Basita Eddit to level matters in the 65th minute.

But the visitors only needed five minutes to restore their lead, thanks to URA midfielder Oscar Agaba who pulled down an opponent and Jean Bosco made no mistake to score the resultant penalty.

The men in white and orange’s celebrations were quickly halted when Ssentongo struck again to level matters on 74 minutes. And another counterattack had Eddit deny Feni before Kalanda tapped in for the winner with 11 minutes to go.

URA will now carry a one-goal advantage to Antananarivo for the return leg in two weeks’ time.
