Gakpe wins it for Nantes

Togo wideman Serge Gakpe was the match-winner as Nantes secured a 1-0 victory over Montpellier.

The Sparrow-Hawks international, who joined the Canaries last summer, entered the fray as a 71st-minute substitute, replacing profligate Israel forward Itay Shechter.

He didn’t take long to make an impact, getting booked after six minutes, before firing home from close range a minute later following a Yacine Bammou cross.

Despite playing the full 90 minutes in Nantes’s first two games of the season, and featuring for over an hour in the defeat to AS Monaco last week, this was the Togo man’s first goal of the campaign.

Last season he managed eight goals in 31 starts for his club, with four assists, but will be looking to improve his contribution this term.

Moroccan forward Bammou impressed for the home side, while Nantes’s key player was probably Senegalese centre-back Papy Djilobodji, who made three tackles, three interceptions and 12 clearances according to
