Chelsea want £20 million Kenya international
Chelsea are prepared to pip fierce rivals Tottenham to the signing of Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama in January.
Jose Mourinho is keen to bolster his midfield options after his team’s faltering start to the campaign in which his side have collected seven points from six games.
The Blues are likely to miss out on summer target Paul Pogba, who is also a target for Barcelona and rejected a move to club this summer, therefore Wanyama would be a cheaper and more likely option.
Tottenham offered £18 million plus Lamela for the Kenya international over the summer, as the Saints refused to sell.
But the south coast club know that his value will drop if they let his current contract run into its final year, with the player clearly stating he wont sign a new deal.
Although Wanyama has two years remaining on his current contract, the Saints may be tempted to sell, however, that may come at a higher than price than Chelsea are reportedly ready to offer as Southampton are keen for him to stay.
A move for the 24-year-old is more likely to happen in the summer, rather than half way through a season, giving the Saints time to find a suitable replacement.
However, Chelsea would benefit from a January move to strengthen their midfield options and would be signing a player that would still be eligible for European fixtures.
