Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood was happy to welcome back Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore following respective injuries to the African duo.

Villa head to Anfield to face Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, with neither side in good form, and the visitors are hoping to welcome back their “best purchase”.

“Gana is training, he might be playing tomorrow. The doctor got a magic wand out,” Sherwood said in his pre-match press conference.

“He has been a revelation since he’s come in. He is one of the new guys who has been outstanding. Idrissa has probably been the best purchase of the summer.”

Gueye suffered a hamstring injury on Africa Cup of Nations qualification duty for Senegal earlier this month and hasn’t featured for the club since their league fixture against Sunderland

Traore could also be in the squad, after suffering an ankle injury against Notts County in the Capital One Cup last month.

“Adama is training, we’ll see how he come although that,” Sherwood added. “He is working with the balls. He can give us a spark and get people out their seats.”

Traore had been a target for Villa’s weekends opponents Liverpool over the summer, before Villa swooped in to take the Malian from Barcelona.

Aston Villa go into the game on the back of a 1-0 League Cup victory over local rivals Birmingham City, thanks to a header from Benin international Rudy Gestede.
