Premier League side Arsenal have opened talks with Senegal defender Cheikhou Kouyate, but face competition for his signature.

The strapping defender is a long-term target for the Gunners, and Arsene Wenger finally appears to have decided to attempt to recruit the international player.

Speaking to, the player’s agent Saffet Balkan revealed that Arsenal had opened discussions to bring Kouyate to the Premier League in time for the start of the new season.

Other clubs have been attracted by the player’s obvious qualities, and the Daily Star name both Liverpool and West Ham United as clubs that will also be tempted by the opportunity to recruit such a highly-regarded prospect.

The agent said: “I have met representatives from Arsenal and West Ham over Kouyate in Belgium. We are currently in talks.

“I will also meet with representatives from Galatasaray and CSKA in Istanbul later today to discuss an offer for Kouyate,”

The 24-year-old was the subject of an offer by Valencia during the January window, but it was rejected by his current club, Anderlecht. It is clear that the West African is destined for a major European league some time soon.
