AFSTZ: Gestede completes Villa switch
Aston Villa have completed the signing of Blackburn Rovers striker Rudy Gestede on a five-year contract.
The Benin international has been targeted by a number of Premier League clubs in recent months, but Villa have shown their intent by meeting Rovers’ asking price.
Watford and Norwich City, both newly-promoted from the Championship were thought to be the two teams battling it out for the 26-year-old’s signature. However, Villa came closest to Blackburn’s £6 million price tag to seal the deal.
Both Hull City and West Brom were put off by the club’s price tag for the player, while Villa boss Tim Sherwood is very happy with the business the club have done.
“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired,” Sherwood told the club’s official website.
“His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”
Gestede scored 22 goals in 44 games for Rovers last season in the Championship, and could have joined the Premier League back in January, when Crystal Palace had a bid rejected.
