African players in UEFA Team of the Week
Two African defenders have been rewarded for their fine mid-week performances by being named in UEFA’s Team of the Week.
Chancel Mbemba scored twice for Anderlecht as the Belgian side bested Galatasaray. The Congolese defender opened the scoring before the break, before closing off the triumph late on with a second.
The goals signalled the end of Cesare Prandelli’s brief reign as Cimbom manager and guaranteed Anderlecht only their second home Champions League triumph since 2002.
AS Monaco secured an impressive 1-0 victory away against Bayer Leverkusen. The three points significantly boosted their hopes of reaching the Last 16.
While Lucas OCampos stole the show with his winner, Aymen Abdennour has been rewarded by UEFA for his excellent performance at left-back.
Standing in for the injured Layvin Kurzawa, the defender made his competition debut for the club and delivered an exceptional defensive performance, consistently thwarting the Germans’ attacks.
The Tunisia defender also provided the assist for the decisive goal.
