Shakes Mashaba’s Bafana Bafana side beat Zambia 1-0 in a tight pre-Cup of Nations friendly.

There were changes for both sides as the pair of coaches juggled their options ahead of the AFCON. South Africa were without Thulani Serero, Kermit Erasmus and Sibusiso Khumalo, all of whom featured during qualification.

Zambia, meanwhile, were missing Emmanuel Mbola and Evans Kangwa, whose tournament participations are under threat because of Ebola concerns on the part of their Israeli employers.

This disjointed affair was settled on 81 minutes when Bafana substitute Thuso Phala, on for Mandla Masango, fired past Danny Munyao after fine work from Bernard Parker. The Kaizer Chiefs forward made his first showing for the national side since a 2014 friendly against Brazil.

Both sides suffered injury concerns, with Thabo Matlaba and Kennedy Mweene being taken off with knocks.

Phala could have had a second late on after further promising interaction with Parker.
