REPORT: ES Setif win CAF Super Cup
Algerian side Entente Sportive de Setif defeated Al Ahly of Egypt 6-5 on penalties to win the CAF Super Cup on Saturday evening.
The match played in Bilda, Algiers had ended 1-1 after normal time before Setif held their nerves to become the first Algerian club to win the CAF Super Cup.
Setif took the lead with on the clock 72 minutes through Abdelmalek Ziaya before veteran striker Emad Meteb equalised for Al Ahly in stoppage time after a goalmouth scramble.
The match between The Confederation Cup winner and the CAF Champions League winner proceeded straight to penalties after normal time.
In what was a tense shoot-out between the two sides, Setif emerged winners when Al Ahly’s Bassem Ali stepped up but blasted the last penalty high over the bar.
The Super Cup win caps a fruitful period for Setif after winning the CAF Champions League and being crowned CAF Club of the Year. Their coach Kheireddine Madoui who becomes the youngest coach ever to win the Super Cup was recently voted CAF coach of the year.
