Matip to miss AFCON?
Cameroon star Joel Matip has reassured Liverpool that he has no intention of playing for Indomitable Lions in next month’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Indomitable Lions boss Hugo Broos was on a mission to convince the Reds centre-back to end his self-imposed international exile.
However, following talks with his national team coach, Matip’s stance is unchanged. The former Schalke defender will remain with Liverpool at a crucial stage of the campaign rather than take part in the tournament in Gabon from January 14 to February 5.
His decision will be a source of relief for Jurgen Klopp. Matip has established himself as a key member of the Liverpool side following his summer move from the Bundesliga and his absence for a month would have been a crushing blow.
The Reds will lose Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations as he’s part of the Senegal squad.
Matip, who hasn’t played for Cameroon since 2015, returned to training with the Liverpool squad this week after missing last Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Bournemouth due to an ankle injury.
Matip is set to return to Klopp’s side for Sunday’s Premier League clash with West Ham at Anfield.
