Matip late header saves Schalke
Joel Matip struck a late header to help Schalke 04 come from behind twice to secure a 2-2 stalemate against Hertha Berlin in The Bundesliga on Saturday.
Only days after bowing out of the UEFA Champions League with respect, the Cameroonian defender Matip nodded in late for Schalke to earn a vital point in the quest for continental football next season.
Coach Roberto Di Matteo’s side are now settled in fifth place after adding one to tally 39 points from 25 matches.
Hosts Berlin had earlier taken the lead through German-born Tunisian Anis Ben-Hatira who found himself unmarked and scored past a hapless Timon Wellenreuther in the 21st minute.
But Schalke found respite before half-time through Leroy Sane. And with eight minutes left on the clock, Berlin interim boss Pál Dárdai saw his side reclaim the lead through Genki Haraguchi who reacted quick to rebound from Valentin Stocker’s blocked effort.
