Manchester United are ready to test the resolve of Serie A side Roma by launching a €14m bid for Mehdi Benatia at the end of the season.

The Moroccan has been impressive since his summer switch to the capital-based side, helping them to second place in the table behind leaders Juventus.

According to Tuttosport, this form has led to the Moroccan stopper being identified as the long term replacement for United captain Nemanja Vidic who confirmed his departure this summer after eight years at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old is no stranger to United, as the defender was reportedly on the radar of the Red Devils last summer before being snapped up by Roma.

With Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra’s contracts up in the summer, and a major clear-out by David Moyes expected, defensive reinforcements will be top of the agenda at the Theatre of Dreams.

Missing out on a Champions place could hinder the Red Devils’ chances of landing the Moroccan, as Roma themselves look to be closing in on Champions League qualification.
