Ivory Coast face sanctions
A mass pitch invasion is likely to result in sanctions from the Confederation of African Football, following Ivory Coast’s Cup of Nations qualification.
The incident followed Les Elephants’ goalless draw with Cameroon which ensured second spot in the group and their place at the Cup of Nations finals in January. Police could not withhold the mass surge of fans onto the pitch, with one fan trying to take Gervinho’s shorts.
CAF is awaiting the referee’s match report before assessing what action they will take.
Fans were beaten by police in attempt to restrain fans, while others hung from goal posts in celebration at the Felix Houphoet-Boigny stadium as they prepare to head to Equatorial Guinea in the new year.
Ivory Coast’s draw was enough to secure their qualification, a point ahead of DR Congo on nine points, who qualified as the best third place team in qualifying. Meaning all but Sierra Leone – who have played their home fixtures outside of the country due to the Ebola crisis – have qualified from Group D.
