Record signing Brown Ideye made his debut for new club West Bromwich Albion on Saturday as they played out a goalless draw against Southampton at St. Mary’s.

The Nigerian came off the bench in the 52nd minute, replacing compatriot Victor Anichebe who went off injured. He almost made it a dream debut for the Baggies, as his smart turn put him through on goal inside the penalty area, only to have his effort smothered by Saints’ keeper Fraser Forster.

This followed an earlier opportunity at the back post, which he headed into the side-netting. However, Ideye declared himself satisfied with his outing.

“It was a good debut but I really wanted to score today,” Ideye told the club’s official website.

“The first header was close, in my mind it was in, I saw the ball and anticipated a move to the back post, I was unlucky.

“The second chance, I made a great turn but the ‘keeper came out very quickly and it was a good save.”
