Davies blunder goes unpunished

Hull City managed to escape from Sunderland with three points despite a horrible blunder from defender Curtis Davies.

The Sierra Leonean centre-back, reinstalled to the side after some time out with injury, made a dreadful error during the opening stages at the Stadium of Light.

After only 30 seconds, Davies, with plenty of time on the ball, appeared indecisive and horribly under-hit a backpass to goalkeeper Allan McGregor. Adam Johnson seized the initiative, bundling Davies off the ball before firing home past the Scottish stopper.

The Tigers, however, facing an extension of their 10-game winless run, fought back and responded through Gaston Ramirez, James Chester and Nikica Jelavic.

Davies, for his part, improved over the contest and could have added another goal late on.

The defender was dropped by Steve Bruce earlier in the season and has been a January transfer target for both the Black Cats and Leicester City.
