Wigan Athletic are pursuing the signing of Nigerian Bolton Wanderers winger Sanmi Odelusi in their bid to return to the Championship.

The 22-year-old has failed to hold down a regular place in Bolton’s squad in the second tier, but has had successful loan spells at MK Dons and Coventry City.

Odelusi is being targeted by Wigan boss Gary Caldwell as a replacement for recently departed James McClean, following their relegation last season.

He scored three goals in 14 appearances for Coventry, having joined the club in January, but is now set to join League One side Wigan.

The former Queens Park Rangers and Reading youngster made nine first team appearances at Bolton, scoring twice on his full debut for the club, against Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup.
